    Creativity and Enquiry in Action: a case study of cross-curricular approaches in teacher education

    The current Key Stage 3 National Curriculum for England orders that our education foster determination, adaptability, confidence, risk-taking, enterprise, creativity and enjoyment in a cross-curricular context in pupils. To appreciate these dimensions student teachers need to have multiple opportunities to experience such a curriculum for themselves. However, initial teacher education is an intense and demanding experience; student teachers veer between phases of basic survival and personal innovation as they develop their individual pedagogy and personal philosophy. For new secondary teachers their own subject specialism forms a core feature of their emerging professional identity and can act as a barrier to collaborative practice beyond that specialism. This paper discusses one example of a cross-curricular approach in which Art and Geography PGCE students reflect on their experiences of a collaborative event designed to break down subject barriers while exploiting the potential of subject specialism. Data collected from semi-structured interviews conducted with a sample of students during the two-day event is discussed. Data revealed that critical outcomes of the event included the practice and development of genuine collaboration, negotiation, teamwork, and leadership

    Experimental measurements of the laminar separation bubble on an Eppler 387 airfoil at low Reynolds numbers

    An experimental investigation was conducted to measure the flow velocity in the boundary layer of an Eppler 387 airfoil. In particular, the laminar separation bubble that this airfoil exhibits at low Reynolds numbers was the focus. Single component laser Doppler velocimetry data were obtained at a Reynolds number of 100,000 at an angle of attack of 2.0 degree. Static Pressure and flow visualization data for the Eppler 387 airfoil were also obtained. The difficulty in obtaining accurate experimental measurements at low Reynolds numbers is addressed. Laser Doppler velocimetry boundary layer data for the NACA 663-018 airfoil at a Reynolds number of 160,000 and angle of attack of 12 degree is also presented

    A Stable Optical Trap from a Single Optical Field Utilizing Birefringence

    We report a stable double optical spring effect in an optical cavity pumped with a single optical field that arises as a result of birefringence. One end of the cavity is formed by a multilayer Al0.92_{0.92}Ga0.08_{0.08}As/GaAs stack supported by a microfabricated cantilever, with a natural mode frequency of 274274 Hz. The optical spring shifts the resonance to 2121 kHz, corresponding to a suppression of low frequency vibrations by a factor of more than 10410^{4}. The stable nature of the optical trap allows the cavity to be operated without any external feedback and with only a single optical field incident

    Child Abuse Reporting: Rethinking Child Protection

    The general public has been bewildered by the magnitude of sex abuse cases and the widespread failure by pillars of the community to notify appropriate authorities. The crime of sexually abusing children is punishable in all jurisdictions and this article examines the duty to report suspected cases by individuals in positions of trust over young people, such as in the church or university sports. The Federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) defines child maltreatment as an act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caregiver that results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse, or exploitation, and establishes minimum federal standards. Each state has its own definitions of maltreatment and every state identifies persons who are required to report child abuse. As such, state law is highly variable in defining who has a mandatory duty to report, and clergy and other individuals in close supervision of children (e.g., athletic coaches, scout leaders, volunteers in religious programs, and university officials) may necessarily hold such duty. The article outlines why there are strong moral reasons the law should require all adults in close supervision of children to report any individual who they have good reason to believe has abused a child and moreover outlines how to ensure prompt reporting of abuse, while still ensuring that respected individuals are not falsely accused

    Inhaled particle counts on bicycle commute routes of low and high proximity to motorised traffic

    Frequent exposure to ultrafine particles (UFP) is associated with detrimental effects on cardiopulmonary function and health. UFP dose and therefore the associated health risk are a factor of exposure frequency, duration, and magnitude of (therefore also proximity to) a UFP emission source. Bicycle commuters using on-road routes during peak traffic times are sharing a microenvironment with high levels of motorised traffic, a major UFP emission source. Inhaled particle counts were measured along popular pre-identified bicycle commute route alterations of low (LOW) and high (HIGH) motorised traffic to the same inner-city destination at peak commute traffic times. During commute, real-time particle number concentration (PNC; mostly in the UFP range) and particle diameter (PD), heart and respiratory rate, geographical location, and meteorological variables were measured. To determine inhaled particle counts, ventilation rate was calculated from heart-rate-ventilation associations, produced from periodic exercise testing. Total mean PNC of LOW (compared to HIGH) was reduced (1.56 x e4 ± 0.38 x e4 versus 3.06 x e4 ± 0.53 x e4 ppcc; p = 0.012). Total estimated ventilation rate did not vary significantly between LOW and HIGH (43 ± 5 versus 46 ± 9 L•min; p = 0.136); however, due to total mean PNC, accumulated inhaled particle counts were 48% lower in LOW, compared to HIGH (7.6 x e8 ± 1.5 x e8 versus 14.6 x e8 ± 1.8 x e8; p = 0.003). For bicycle commuting at peak morning commute times, inhaled particle counts and therefore cardiopulmonary health risk may be substantially reduced by decreasing exposure to motorised traffic, which should be considered by both bicycle commuters and urban planners

    Commodity trading firms work to remain competitive in the evolving agricultural industry. They work to become more efficient by increasing economies of size and scale, vertically and horizontally integrating, and diversifying geographically, or any combination of these avenues. Geographically diverse firms have access to multiple origins between which, spatial arbitrage opportunities can occur. When spatial arbitrage opportunities occur, firms take advantage of them to generate profit. Origin switching options are one way to take advantage of these opportunities. Origin switching option allow the seller of grain to fill a contract with any listed origin at the cost of the premium negotiated. This thesis helps to determine the value of these origin type switching options by developing a Monte Carlo simulation model with real option analysis. Soybean and corn markets are analyzed in the U.S. Gulf, Pacific Northwest, Brazil, Argentine, and origins with China and Japan as the respective destinations
